A glimpse at Self-agency in action!

This is a video that Jasmine and Ashlee prepared in their own time. It is a video about being self-agent and what it means to the students :) Well done!

An AMAZING effort by Ella writing her persuasive essay about kite flying! Check this out!

Kite Flying.
A persuasive essay by Ella Crook

‘I’m doing it, I’m doing it! I’m flying a kite!’ Do you recognise these words? These words were spoken by the fictional character, Charlie Brown, when he first flew a kite. And it definitely put a smile on his face. So that’s why I’m here to convince you why you should fly a kite. It makes you smile, it’s fun, and you could spend this time with a family member.

Flying a kite makes you smile. But the real question is, why is a smile so powerful? It all comes down to why smiling can change your brain. When you smile, your brain is aware of this, and actually keeps track of it. The more you smile, the more better you become at breaking the brain’s natural tendency to think negatively. If you smile often enough, you end up making your brain make positive patterns rather than it does negative ones.

Kite flying is fun for anyone at any age. It’s the fact that you get to run away from the kite, as if it's a police chase, and the kite is the cop and you're the robber. And sometimes, it's just fun to watch the kite, with its beautiful colours, glide around in the wind. So go outside, have fun and fly a kite.

Go and fly a kite with a family member- it can be anyone- a cousin, a sibling, or even an Aunty, Uncle or Parent. Spending this time with a loved one is great, because what other way to spend this time with a loved one other than flying a kite? This could be the best way to bond with someone, talking while you look up at your kites, different coloured, watching them glide around in the warm spring air. So go out and fly a kite with a family member.

After all this, haven't you learn’t something? You now know…
  1. Flying a kite makes you smile.
  2. Flying a kite is fun.
  3. Flying a kite with a family member is a great way to bond.
  4. AND THAT YOU SHOULD GO FLY A KITE TODAY!!
‘I'm doing it, I'm doing it, I'm flying a kite!’

Food for Thought

This week we were lucky enough to be visited by Nova. She gave us two 1 hour lessons about Health and Nutrition this week. We learnt a lot about sugar and in particular how much is in our drinks...yikes! We also learnt about the Healthy Food Pyramid :) Thanks so much Nova, you were great!

CHESS CHAMPIONS!

A group of Room 4 students have been making the most of the chess coaching from Miss A senior- (A.K.A my Mum!) Today I asked for volunteers to coach the little guys from Room 1 & 2. Cody, Ella, Meara and Sophie happily obliged, thank you!

HELPING HANDS!

Thanks to Eli, Casey, Teigan, Jasmine, Ashlee and Jordan for helping looking after the classrooms during the wet lunch time today :) I am never short of volunteers from Ruma Wha! Thank you!

kī-o-rahi

We've been playing a really neat game lately called kī-o-rahi. Complicated at first but we're really getting into it now...even I had a go! Kalel taught the class how to play this game, and turns out Alex used to play this on the beach in Gisborne! Great game :)

NEW STOOLS!

Big ups to Mrs Mudgway for sourcing us these amazing stools that we can use in our independent room! Yay we can now sit safely on poofs, instead of stools that had legs that would bend! THAAAAANK YOU :)

Just a little amazing collaborative art!

In Room 4 we have been learning that art and work in general can be collaborative, and that while the work of one person can be amazing, the work of many can be spectacular!

THE GREAT DEBATE!

FUN! We held a debate in class on Tuesday about changing the flag, as we were holding a student referendum as part of a nation-wide schools initiative. We split into groups based on our personal choice, then thought of as many reasons as we could for our side and thought up some counter arguments we thought the opposition might raise. Then we held the debate!
Overall the kiddos really enjoyed the debate and asked if we could hold another one (whether or not Donald Trump should be President or not was one of the many suggested topics!) We then filled in a P.M.I to evaluate our learning...great job Room 4!

Hockey Week 10!

This week we have been lucky enough to have been given some top tips during Hockey lessons. Here are some pictures of the lessons.

Quote of the week!

Every week this Term (and for the rest of the year) I will write a quote on the welcome board that sits outside our classroom. During reading, we discuss what we think this quote means, and discuss an example of where this might apply in life. Interpreting these quotes is great for our reading comprehension and we can use these in our writing too!

Pro8 Challenge

Congratulations to Tyler, Jordan, Alex, Cody, Kalel, Rico, Cam and Josh Louth for completing the Epro8 Challenge at Monrad Intermediate last week! It was a late night (finished at 9pm!) but all teams had fun and I was very proud of how well you worked together as a team :) Next year we will have a better chance now that we know what kind of equipment we get and the types of challenges we will face...look out Palmy North schools! We're coming for you next year!

Seesaw Learning...What are we learning in Maths at the moment???

Here are some Seesaw entries from the amazing new app we've been using to document and discuss our learning. Here are a few entries (please disregard the camera skills, this is not as important as the learning being discussed ;) Thanks to Casey, Teigan, Cody and Kalel for giving their permission to share their learning!

Team Building

So it has been a fun week! Below are some pics of the fun we had with our team building activities. We have been learning about constructive criticism and the growth mindset. I have to admit, we make a pretty good team!

The first challenge: Form 2 groups and fill a vessel using only 2 soup spoons. First to fill wins! Sorry left group for spilling your container :0

Second challenge: Using 6 knives and 6 marshmallows, suspend the knives off the surface using the marshmallows. Then I took away 1 marshmallow at a time until they only had 2 left to use! Even then some groups continued trying with ONE marshmallow, great effort Ruma Whā Whanau!

Day 1!

Lots of fun team building activities completed today :) Be sure to ask your kiddos what they've been up to! This one involved 8 team members devising a way finding a way to keep 4 balls moving and in the air.
